Venezuela Initiates Days of Armed Forces and ‘Electronic Warfare’ Exercises Following American Strikes on Alleged Drug Boats

Venezuela has initiated multiple days of military exercises on its Caribbean island of La Orchila as frictions rise amid American naval movements.

Rising Tensions in the Caribbean

Units positioned for what American officials labeled an counter-narcotics mission have destroyed at least two Venezuelan boats and a total of over a dozen individuals reportedly moving narcotics across the Caribbean this recently.

The attacks and a presence of US warships in the zone have fueled worries of a potential armed incursion in Venezuela.

National Response

The exercise authorized by President Nicolás Maduro was baptised “Sovereign Caribbean”, said the defense chief.

“Our forces will use air defense deployments with armed drones, monitoring devices, underwater units... The operation includes electronic warfare actions,” he declared.

Official broadcasts showed footage of naval units and naval destroyers stationed off La Orchila, where Caracas maintains a military base.

The armed forces stated the drills would involve 12 ships, over twenty planes and a fleet of patrol vessels from the “naval special operations unit”.

Context and Claims

The strategic location is near the area where the Washington's navy seized and controlled a local craft for several hours over the weekend.

The leader, whose last two elections were not validated by the US and many other countries, has vowed that Caracas will defend itself against what he described as US “hostility” against his nation.

The US government is posting a $50m bounty for the capture of Maduro, who is accused of narcotics-related offenses.

Denials and Alternate Narratives

Caracas has demanded an investigation of a US strike on an alleged smuggling craft recently that resulted in the death of 11 people.

It was one of several crafts that the White House said his nation had “destroyed” without providing details.

“There is no proof, because they say it was moving illicit substances but can this be verified?”, questioned a senior official.

The minister stated publicly that authorities had intercepted more than 60 metric tons of illegal substances so far this 2025.

“This represents the largest amount that has been seized since 2010,” added the minister, who – along with Maduro and other senior officials – is under Washington's punitive measures.

US Rationale

The US president has justified armed interventions by stating on public platforms that “illegal smuggling organizations represent a danger to American safety, Foreign Policy, and crucial objectives”.

Washington has published recordings of two of the boat strikes and asserts it has undeniable proof that the people killed were US-bound traffickers, without offering further proof to substantiate the assertions.

The government has always refuted being a trafficking hub.
