It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
