A senior Russian military figure has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

Investigators mentioned that one line of inquiry involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Site of the Blast

Teams have been dispatched to the site, which is said to be in a south district of the city.

Reports state the detonation occurred in a car park near a residential building.

Pattern of Incidents

Since the start of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event echoes other high-profile incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine in the past linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.

Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
